Maintaining blood pressure
My goal is to maintain my blood pressure by doing regular exercises (to prevent hypertension).
Currently: BP 145/97 HR 80
13 July 2012:
Exercise routine:
Cross trainer : 20 mins 100calories
Cycling: 10 mins 40 calories
I walk to work for 25mins: maybe 60calories x 2 = 120cal (home-work-home)
Is this enough??

Re: Maintaining blood pressure
Hi there,
You are hypertensive. Hypertension is having a resting BP of >= 140mmHg / >=90mmHg.
Aerobic exercise like what you are doing indeed will help to bring down BP by about 5 to 7 mmHg. However, you will first need medications to bring down your blood pressure before exercise.
See link below on Rate Pressure Product (RPP):

Your RPP is already 145 x 80 = 11 600
11 600 value is above heart disease risk value of 10 000.
Please seek medical help.

Re: Maintaining blood pressure
Thanks for the input ace.
Just for clarification:
Is maintaining diastolic pressure (60-80mmHg) more important than systolic pressure (120-140mmHg)?

Both are equally important. However, systolic blood pressure has higher impact on the cardiovascular system.
To add on, if the values are high before exercise, cut down on salty food and caffeine intake.
